Aspen gave her the strength she needed to come out of her shell and gave her hopes and dreams beyond anything she'd ever allow herself to wish for. Aspen was Lucy's knight in shining armor and she really needed someone like him in her life. Whereas Lucy was fragile and quite Aspen was strong and brave. As for Aspen, I have always adored and respected him. Lucy was always my favorite of the maids. I love getting a look into Lucy and Aspen's relationship and I am so happy that they ended up together. It seriously made my heart soar with happiness and admiration. and in just that amount of time, I had fallen in love with it! I can't believe it actually brought tears to my eyes □ (I'll post the quote that did me in). The Maid is in Lucy's POV (America's maid) and it takes place during The One when they are all on the plane heading back to the palace after visiting with America's family and Maxon calls them all back two days early because he's finally ready to end The selection and pick his Princess :) “It hurt to think of his lips on mine, of all the possibilities he's whispered to me in darkened rooms. When someone else remembers some great story about me/us that I’ve forgotten. Not walking up but looking at a beautiful staircase. Spending an hour typing at a coffee shop. The Pulitzer Prize-winning Hirohito and the Making of Modern Japan explains the impact this enigmatic figure had on Japan and its place on the world stage. He shows how Hirohito avoided punishment for his nation’s defeat and how the Japanese people have struggled to come to terms with this dark chapter in their history. Bix has unearthed hundreds of previously untapped documents, including the unpublished letters and diaries of Hirohito’s royal court, shedding light on his uniquely active yet self-effacing stewardship.ĭebunking the common image of Hirohito as a pawn in the hands of the military, Bix exposes the emperor’s personal involvement in every stage of the Pacific War. Trained since childhood to lead his nation as a living deity, Japan’s Emperor Hirohito cultivated a detached façade which masked a fierce cunning and powerful ambition. By using breath and drawing upon the color in everyday objects, all manner of miracles and mischief can be accomplished. Their world is one in which those who die in glory return as gods to live confined to a pantheon in Hallandren's capital city and where a power known as BioChromatic magic is based on an essence known as breath that can only be collected one unit at a time from individual people. After WWII ended, oil was at the center of conflicts between European colonial powers and Arab nations over who controlled Middle Eastern resources. The Nazis were also after Russian oil fields because they were looking for more power during WWII. Oil has also played a huge role in many wars over the last century, including World War II, where Japan attacked Pearl Harbor to gain access to oil in East Asia. It was a key factor in World War I, as countries sought control of oil fields to replace horses and coal-fired engines. Oil is critical to the world’s economy and politics. It’s so profitable that seven of the top 20 Fortune 500 companies are in oil. Despite that, luck, fate, risk taking and reward have also shaped how this industry works. Oil is the world’s largest business, and it powers many other businesses. The history of the oil business is intertwined with modern capitalism and corporations. I recognized this as a narrative technique which in a less talented hand would seem cheap. Much of the reason I kept reading in the slow-going first part of this book was because I wanted to know why the 13-yr-old left her privileged life in suburban Miami to become a street kid, or one of the "beach kids". I am usually not one to emphasize story over writing style, but the elegant, polished narrations of mood, weather, tropical urban ambiance, even the author's delicate, precise, baroque, completely mouth-watering descriptions of food and pastry could not overcome some serious flaws in the story. I am giving this book a "4" overall, because even with its faults, bottom line I thought the story (a "3") was only about 70% well-conceived but the writing was polished, lyrical and nuanced, and for the most part I enjoyed reading this. Hunting Fear is the seventh Kay Hooper book I have listened to from Audible. Where does Hunting Fear rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far? Her warnings meet with skepticism from the local police but spur Jordan on to do what he does best: hunt fear.īut the killer he is hunting is hunting Jordan - and he's already several moves ahead in a twisted game whose rules Jordan must learn in order to have a fighting chance. Complicating the situation is the presence - and predictions - of someone who's even more of an outsider than Jordan himself: carnival psychic Samantha Burke, a woman out of his own haunted past. Now Jordan has come to Clayton County, North Carolina, where the latest in a string of kidnapping victims has turned up dead. But his uncanny ability comes with a price, and his methods rouse mistrust in the hard-nosed cops forced to call him into their investigations. Lucas Jordan, a key agent and profiler in Noah Bishop's Special Crimes Unit, has an extraordinary skill: he locates missing people. Now, after months of eluding the best that law enforcement can put against him, this monster has left nothing in his wake but a cold trail of unconnected victims. Not only does he strike again and again, but he collects the ransom, gets away safely, and leaves his helpless hostages dead. Ward, Erika Wilde, Gena Showalter, and Carly Phillips.
